Matthew 1 | Matthew 3

2:1

Τοῦ δὲ Ἰησοῦ γεννηθέντος ἐν Βηθλέεμ τῆς Ἰουδαίας ἡμέραις Ἡρῴδου τοῦ βασιλέως ἰδοὺ μάγοι ἀπὸ ἀνατολῶν παρεγένοντο εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα

Tou de Iēsou gennēthentos en Bēthleem tēs Ioudaias hēmerais Hērōdou tou basileōs idou magoi apo anatolōn paregenonto eis Hierosolyma

- however of Jesus having been born in Bethlehem - Judea days of Herod of the king Behold Magi from east arrived for Jerusalem

2:2

λέγοντες Ποῦ ἐστιν ὁ τεχθεὶς βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων; εἴδομεν γὰρ αὐτοῦ τὸν ἀστέρα ἐν τῇ ἀνατολῇ καὶ ἤλθομεν προσκυνῆσαι αὐτῷ

legontes Pou estin ho techtheis basileus tōn Ioudaiōn eidomen gar autou ton astera en tē anatolē kai ēlthomen proskynēsai autō

saying Where is - having been born King of the Jews? We saw for of Him’” the star in the east And are come to worship to Him

2:3

Ἀκούσας δὲ ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἡρῴδης ἐταράχθη καὶ πᾶσα Ἱεροσόλυμα μετ’ αὐτοῦ

akousas de ho basileus Hērōdēs etarachthē kai pasa Hierosolyma met’ autou

Having heard however - King Herod he was troubled And all Jerusalem with of Him’”

2:4

καὶ συναγαγὼν πάντας τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς γραμματεῖς τοῦ λαοῦ ἐπυνθάνετο παρ’ αὐτῶν ποῦ ὁ Χριστὸς γεννᾶται

kai synagagōn pantas tous archiereis grammateis tou laou epynthaneto par’ autōn pou ho Christos gennatai

And having gathered together all the chief priests scribes of the people he was inquiring belonging to of them where - Christ was to be born

2:5

Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Ἐν Βηθλέεμ τῆς Ἰουδαίας οὕτως γὰρ γέγραπται διὰ τοῦ προφήτου

hoi de eipan autō en Bēthleem tēs Ioudaias houtōs gar gegraptai dia tou prophētou

- however they said to Him By Bethlehem - Judea thus for it has been written on account of of the prophet

2:6

Καὶ σύ Βηθλέεμ γῆ Ἰούδα οὐδαμῶς ἐλαχίστη εἶ ἐν τοῖς ἡγεμόσιν ἐκ σοῦ γὰρ ἐξελεύσεται ἡγούμενος ὅστις ποιμανεῖ τὸν λαόν μου Ἰσραήλ

kai sy Bēthleem gē Iouda oudamōs elachistē ei en tois hēgemosin ek sou gar exeleusetai hēgoumenos hostis poimanei ton laon mou Israēl

And You Bethlehem earth Judas by no means least are in on the rulers from you for will go forth [One] leading who will shepherd the people of Me O Israel:

2:7

Τότε Ἡρῴδης λάθρᾳ καλέσας τοὺς μάγους ἠκρίβωσεν παρ’ αὐτῶν τὸν χρόνον τοῦ φαινομένου ἀστέρος

Tote Hērōdēs lathra kalesas tous magous ēkribōsen par’ autōn ton chronon tou phainomenou asteros

Then Herod secretly having called the Magi inquired exactly belonging to of them the time of the appearing star

2:8

καὶ πέμψας αὐτοὺς εἰς Βηθλέεμ εἶπεν Πορευθέντες ἐξετάσατε ἀκριβῶς περὶ τοῦ παιδίου ἐπὰν δὲ εὕρητε ἀπαγγείλατέ μοι ὅπως κἀγὼ ἐλθὼν προσκυνήσω αὐτῷ

kai pempsas autous eis Bēthleem eipen Poreuthentes exetasate akribōs peri tou paidiou epan de heurēte apangeilate moi hopōs kagō elthōn proskynēsō autō

And having sent they for Bethlehem said Having gone search carefully around of the child when however You shall have found [Him] bring word back Me how I also having come may worship to Him

2:9

Οἱ δὲ ἀκούσαντες τοῦ βασιλέως ἐπορεύθησαν καὶ ἰδοὺ ὁ ἀστὴρ ὃν εἶδον ἐν τῇ ἀνατολῇ προῆγεν αὐτούς ἕως ἐλθὼν ἐστάθη ἐπάνω οὗ ἦν τὸ παιδίον

hoi de akousantes tou basileōs eporeuthēsan kai idou ho astēr hon eidon en tē anatolē proēgen autous heōs elthōn estathē epanō hou ēn to paidion

- however having heard [of it] of the king they went away And Behold - star which they saw in the east went before them until having come it stood for above of whom was the child

2:10

ἰδόντες δὲ τὸν ἀστέρα ἐχάρησαν χαρὰν μεγάλην σφόδρα

idontes de ton astera echarēsan charan megalēn sphodra

having seen however the star they rejoiced joy loud extremely

2:11

καὶ ἐλθόντες εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν εἶδον τὸ παιδίον μετὰ Μαρίας τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ πεσόντες προσεκύνησαν αὐτῷ ἀνοίξαντες τοὺς θησαυροὺς αὐτῶν προσήνεγκαν δῶρα χρυσὸν λίβανον σμύρναν

kai elthontes eis tēn oikian eidon to paidion meta Marias tēs mētros autou pesontes prosekynēsan autō anoixantes tous thēsaurous autōn prosēnenkan dōra chryson libanon smyrnan

And having come for the house they saw the child with of Mary - mother of Him’” having fallen down they worshiped to Him having opened the treasures of them they offered gifts gold frankincense myrrh

2:12

Καὶ χρηματισθέντες κατ’ ὄναρ μὴ ἀνακάμψαι πρὸς Ἡρῴδην δι’ ἄλλης ὁδοῦ ἀνεχώρησαν εἰς τὴν χώραν αὐτῶν

kai chrēmatisthentes kat’ onar mē anakampsai pros Hērōdēn di’ allēs hodou anechōrēsan eis tēn chōran autōn

And having been divinely warned With a dream not to return to Herod after [some] another route they withdrew for the region of them

2:13

Ἀναχωρησάντων δὲ αὐτῶν ἰδοὺ ἄγγελος κυρίου φαίνεται κατ’ ὄναρ τῷ Ἰωσὴφ λέγων Ἐγερθεὶς παράλαβε τὸ παιδίον καὶ τὴν μητέρα αὐτοῦ φεῦγε εἰς Αἴγυπτον ἴσθι ἐκεῖ ἕως ἂν εἴπω σοι μέλλει γὰρ Ἡρῴδης ζητεῖν τοῦ ἀπολέσαι αὐτό

Anachōrēsantōn de autōn idou angelos kyriou phainetai kat’ onar tō Iōsēph legōn egertheis paralabe to paidion kai tēn mētera autou pheuge eis Aigypton isthi ekei heōs an eipō soi mellei gar Hērōdēs zētein tou apolesai auto

Having withdrawn however of them Behold an angel of [the] Lord appears With a dream - Joseph saying Having been awoken take the child And the mother of Him’” flee for Egypt be there until - I should tell to You is about for Herod to seek of the to destroy it

2:14

Ὁ δὲ ἐγερθεὶς παρέλαβεν τὸ παιδίον καὶ τὴν μητέρα αὐτοῦ νυκτὸς ἀνεχώρησεν εἰς Αἴγυπτον

ho de egertheis parelaben to paidion kai tēn mētera autou nyktos anechōrēsen eis Aigypton

- however having arisen received the child And the mother of Him’” night withdrew for Egypt

2:15

καὶ ἦν ἐκεῖ ἕως τῆς τελευτῆς Ἡρῴδου ἵνα πληρωθῇ τὸ ῥηθὲν ὑπὸ κυρίου διὰ τοῦ προφήτου λέγοντος Ἐξ Αἰγύπτου ἐκάλεσα τὸν υἱόν μου

kai ēn ekei heōs tēs teleutēs Hērōdou hina plērōthē to rhēthen hypo kyriou dia tou prophētou legontos Ex Aigyptou ekalesa ton huion mou

And was there until - death of Herod so that may be fulfilled the was spoken of by of [the] Lord on account of of the prophet saying From of Egypt have I called the son of Me

2:16

Τότε Ἡρῴδης ἰδὼν ὅτι ἐνεπαίχθη ὑπὸ τῶν μάγων ἐθυμώθη λίαν καὶ ἀποστείλας ἀνεῖλεν πάντας τοὺς παῖδας ἐν Βηθλέεμ πᾶσι τοῖς ὁρίοις αὐτῆς ἀπὸ διετοῦς κατωτέρω κατὰ τὸν χρόνον ὃν ἠκρίβωσεν παρὰ

Tote Hērōdēs idōn hoti enepaichthē hypo tōn magōn ethymōthē lian kai aposteilas aneilen pantas tous paidas en Bēthleem pasi tois horiois autēs apo dietous katōterō kata ton chronon hon ēkribōsen para

Then Herod having seen - he had been outwitted by of the Magi was enraged still much And having sent he put to death all the boys in Bethlehem all on the vicinity her from two years old under with the time which inquired exactly by

2:17

τότε ἐπληρώθη τὸ ῥηθὲν διὰ Ἰερεμίου τοῦ προφήτου λέγοντος

tote eplērōthē to rhēthen dia Ieremiou tou prophētou legontos

then was fulfilled the was spoken of on account of Jeremiah of the prophet saying

2:18

Φωνὴ ἐν Ῥαμὰ ἠκούσθη κλαυθμὸς καὶ ὀδυρμὸς πολύς Ῥαχὴλ κλαίουσα τὰ τέκνα αὐτῆς οὐκ ἤθελεν παρακληθῆναι ὅτι εἰσίν

phōnē en Rhama ēkousthē klauthmos kai odyrmos polys Rhachēl klaiousa ta tekna autēs ouk ēthelen paraklēthēnai hoti eisin

[The] voice in Ramah it was heard weeping And mourning great Rachel weeping [for] the children her not he wanted be comforted - there are

2:19

Τελευτήσαντος δὲ τοῦ Ἡρῴδου ἰδοὺ ἄγγελος Κυρίου φαίνεται κατ’ ὄναρ τῷ Ἰωσὴφ ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ

Teleutēsantos de tou Hērōdou idou angelos Kyriou phainetai kat’ onar tō Iōsēph en Aigyptō

Having died however of the of Herod Behold an angel of [the] Lord appears With a dream - Joseph in Egypt

2:20

λέγων Ἐγερθεὶς παράλαβε τὸ παιδίον καὶ τὴν μητέρα αὐτοῦ πορεύου εἰς γῆν Ἰσραήλ τεθνήκασιν γὰρ οἱ ζητοῦντες ψυχὴν τοῦ παιδίου

legōn egertheis paralabe to paidion kai tēn mētera autou poreuou eis gēn Israēl tethnēkasin gar hoi zētountes psychēn tou paidiou

saying Having been awoken take the child And the mother of Him’” go for soil O Israel: they have died for - seeking Life of the child

2:21

Ὁ δὲ ἐγερθεὶς παρέλαβεν τὸ παιδίον καὶ τὴν μητέρα αὐτοῦ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς γῆν Ἰσραήλ

ho de egertheis parelaben to paidion kai tēn mētera autou eisēlthen eis gēn Israēl

- however having arisen received the child And the mother of Him’” he entered for soil O Israel:

2:22

ἀκούσας δὲ ὅτι Ἀρχέλαος βασιλεύει τῆς Ἰουδαίας ἀντὶ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ Ἡρῴδου ἐφοβήθη ἐκεῖ ἀπελθεῖν χρηματισθεὶς κατ’ ὄναρ ἀνεχώρησεν εἰς τὰ μέρη Γαλιλαίας

akousas de hoti Archelaos basileuei tēs Ioudaias anti tou patros autou Hērōdou ephobēthē ekei apelthein chrēmatistheis kat’ onar anechōrēsen eis ta merē Galilaias

having heard however - Archelaus reigns over - Judea for of the father of Him’” of Herod he was afraid there to depart having been divinely warned With a dream withdrew for the district of Galilee

2:23

καὶ ἐλθὼν κατῴκησεν εἰς πόλιν λεγομένην Ναζαρέτ ὅπως πληρωθῇ τὸ ῥηθὲν διὰ τῶν προφητῶν ὅτι Ναζωραῖος κληθήσεται

kai elthōn katōkēsen eis polin legomenēn Nazaret hopōs plērōthē to rhēthen dia tōn prophētōn hoti Nazōraios klēthēsetai

And having come he dwelt for city being called Nazareth how may be fulfilled the was spoken of on account of of the prophets - A Nazarene will be called
