3:1

Ἐν ἔτει δὲ πεντεκαιδεκάτῳ τῆς ἡγεμονίας Τιβερίου Καίσαρος ἡγεμονεύοντος Ποντίου Πιλάτου Ἰουδαίας καὶ τετρααρχοῦντος Γαλιλαίας Ἡρῴδου Φιλίππου τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ Ἰτουραίας Τραχωνίτιδος χώρας Λυσανίου Ἀβιληνῆς

en etei de pentekaidekatō tēs hēgemonias Tiberiou Kaisaros hēgemoneuontos Pontiou Pilatou Ioudaias kai tetraarchountos Galilaias Hērōdou Philippou tou adelphou autou Itouraias Trachōnitidos chōras Lysaniou Abilēnēs

By year however fifteenth - reign of Tiberius Caesar’s was governing Pontius Pilate Judea And being tetrarch of Galilee of Herod of Philip of the brother of Him’” of Ituraea of Trachonitis country Lysanias of Abilene

3:2

ἐπὶ ἀρχιερέως Ἅννα καὶ Καϊάφα ἐγένετο ῥῆμα Θεοῦ Ἰωάννην τὸν Ζαχαρίου υἱὸν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ

epi archiereōs Hanna kai Kaiapha egeneto rhēma Theou Iōannēn ton Zachariou huion en tē erēmō

at the high priest Anna And Caiaphas it came to pass saying of God of John the of Zechariah son in the wilderness

3:3

Καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς πᾶσαν τὴν περίχωρον τοῦ Ἰορδάνου κηρύσσων βάπτισμα μετανοίας ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν

kai ēlthen eis pasan tēn perichōron tou Iordanou kēryssōn baptisma metanoias aphesin hamartiōn

And [that] came for all the surrounding region of the Jordan proclaiming [a] baptism of repentance forgiveness of sins

3:4

ὡς γέγραπται ἐν βίβλῳ λόγων Ἠσαΐου τοῦ προφήτου Φωνὴ βοῶντος τῇ ἐρήμῳ Ἑτοιμάσατε τὴν ὁδὸν Κυρίου εὐθείας ποιεῖτε τὰς τρίβους αὐτοῦ

hōs gegraptai en biblō logōn Ēsaiou tou prophētou phōnē boōntos tē erēmō Hetoimasate tēn hodon Kyriou eutheias poieite tas tribous autou

as it has been written in book words Isaiah of the prophet [The] voice of one crying the wilderness Prepare the way of [the] Lord straight make the paths of Him’”

3:5

πᾶσα φάραγξ πληρωθήσεται καὶ πᾶν ὄρος βουνὸς ταπεινωθήσεται ἔσται τὰ σκολιὰ εἰς εὐθείαν* αἱ τραχεῖαι ὁδοὺς λείας

pasa pharanx plērōthēsetai kai pan oros bounos tapeinōthēsetai estai ta skolia eis eutheian hai tracheiai hodous leias

all valley will be filled And everything mountain hill will be humbled it will be the crooked for straight the rough highways smooth

3:6

καὶ ὄψεται πᾶσα σὰρξ τὸ σωτήριον τοῦ Θεοῦ

kai opsetai pasa sarx to sōtērion tou Theou

And will see all the flesh the salvation of the of God

3:7

Ἔλεγεν οὖν τοῖς ἐκπορευομένοις ὄχλοις βαπτισθῆναι ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ Γεννήματα ἐχιδνῶν τίς ὑπέδειξεν ὑμῖν φυγεῖν ἀπὸ τῆς μελλούσης ὀργῆς;

elegen oun tois ekporeuomenois ochlois baptisthēnai hyp’ autou Gennēmata echidnōn tis hypedeixen hymin phygein apo tēs mellousēs orgēs

He was saying therefore on the coming out crowds to be baptized by of Him’” Brood of vipers who forewarned to you to flee from - coming wrath?

3:8

ποιήσατε οὖν καρποὺς ἀξίους τῆς μετανοίας καὶ μὴ ἄρξησθε λέγειν ἐν ἑαυτοῖς Πατέρα ἔχομεν τὸν Ἀβραάμ λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν ὅτι δύναται ὁ Θεὸς ἐκ τῶν λίθων τούτων ἐγεῖραι τέκνα τῷ

poiēsate oun karpous axious tēs metanoias kai mē arxēsthe legein en heautois Patera echomen ton Abraam legō gar hymin hoti dynatai ho Theos ek tōn lithōn toutōn egeirai tekna tō

Produce therefore fruits worthy - of repentance And not begin to say in themselves [As] father have we the of Abraham: I say for to you - is able - God from of the stones these to raise up children -

3:9

ἤδη δὲ καὶ ἡ ἀξίνη πρὸς τὴν ῥίζαν τῶν δένδρων κεῖται πᾶν οὖν δένδρον μὴ ποιοῦν καρπὸν καλὸν ἐκκόπτεται εἰς πῦρ βάλλεται

ēdē de kai hē axinē pros tēn rhizan tōn dendrōn keitai pan oun dendron mē poioun karpon kalon ekkoptetai eis pyr balletai

already however And the ax to the root of the trees is applied everything therefore tree not producing fruit Good [is] is cut down for fire is thrown

3:10

Καὶ ἐπηρώτων αὐτὸν οἱ ὄχλοι λέγοντες Τί οὖν ποιήσωμεν;

kai epērōtōn auton hoi ochloi legontes Ti oun poiēsōmen

And were asking him - crowds saying What therefore shall we do?

3:11

Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς Ὁ ἔχων δύο χιτῶνας μεταδότω τῷ μὴ ἔχοντι καὶ ὁ βρώματα ὁμοίως ποιείτω

apokritheis de elegen autois ho echōn dyo chitōnas metadotō tō mē echonti kai ho brōmata homoiōs poieitō

Answering however He said to them - having two tunics let him impart - not having And - food likewise let him do

3:12

Ἦλθον δὲ καὶ τελῶναι βαπτισθῆναι εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτόν Διδάσκαλε τί ποιήσωμεν;

ēlthon de kai telōnai baptisthēnai eipan pros auton Didaskale ti poiēsōmen

Came however And tax collectors to be baptized they said to Him Teacher Which shall we do?

3:13

Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Μηδὲν πλέον παρὰ τὸ διατεταγμένον ὑμῖν πράσσετε

ho de eipen pros autous Mēden pleon para to diatetagmenon hymin prassete

- however said to them [Let there be] nothing more by the having been appointed to you collect

3:14

Ἐπηρώτων δὲ αὐτὸν καὶ στρατευόμενοι λέγοντες Τί ποιήσωμεν ἡμεῖς; Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Μηδένα διασείσητε μηδὲ συκοφαντήσητε ἀρκεῖσθε τοῖς ὀψωνίοις ὑμῶν

epērōtōn de auton kai strateuomenoi legontes Ti poiēsōmen hēmeis kai eipen autois Mēdena diaseisēte mēde sykophantēsēte arkeisthe tois opsōniois hymōn

Were asking however him And those being soldiers saying What let us make we? And said to them No one extort not even accuse falsely be content with on the wages you

3:15

Προσδοκῶντος δὲ τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ διαλογιζομένων πάντων ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις αὐτῶν περὶ Ἰωάννου μή‿ ποτε αὐτὸς εἴη ὁ Χριστός

Prosdokōntos de tou laou kai dialogizomenōn pantōn en tais kardiais autōn peri Iōannou mē pote autos eiē ho Christos

Are expecting however of the people And wondering all in - hearts of them around John lest ever He might be - Christ

3:16

ἀπεκρίνατο λέγων πᾶσιν ὁ Ἰωάννης Ἐγὼ μὲν ὕδατι βαπτίζω ὑμᾶς ἔρχεται δὲ ἰσχυρότερός μου οὗ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἱκανὸς λῦσαι τὸν ἱμάντα τῶν ὑποδημάτων αὐτοῦ αὐτὸς βαπτίσει ἐν Πνεύματι Ἁγίῳ καὶ πυρί

apekrinato legōn pasin ho Iōannēs Egō men hydati baptizō hymas erchetai de ischyroteros mou hou ouk eimi hikanos lysai ton himanta tōn hypodēmatōn autou autos baptisei en Pneumati Hagiō kai pyri

did He answer saying among all - John I [am] - with water baptize you comes however [is] mightier of Me of whom not I am sufficient to untie the strap of the sandals of Him’” He will baptize in [the] Spirit Holy And with fire

3:17

οὗ τὸ πτύον ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ διακαθᾶραι τὴν ἅλωνα καὶ συναγαγεῖν τὸν σῖτον εἰς ἀποθήκην δὲ ἄχυρον κατακαύσει πυρὶ ἀσβέστῳ

hou to ptyon en tē cheiri autou diakatharai tēn halōna kai synagagein ton siton eis apothēkēn de achyron katakausei pyri asbestō

of whom the winnowing fork [is] in the hand of Him’” to clear the threshing floor And to gather the wheat for barn however chaff He will burn up with fire unquenchable

3:18

Πολλὰ μὲν οὖν καὶ ἕτερα παρακαλῶν εὐηγγελίζετο τὸν λαόν

Polla men oun kai hetera parakalōn euēngelizeto ton laon

Many - therefore And other imploring he was preaching the good news to the people

3:19

ὁ δὲ Ἡρῴδης τετραάρχης ἐλεγχόμενος ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ περὶ Ἡρῳδιάδος τῆς γυναικὸς τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ καὶ πάντων ὧν ἐποίησεν πονηρῶν

ho de Hērōdēs tetraarchēs elenchomenos hyp’ autou peri Hērōdiados tēs gynaikos tou adelphou kai pantōn hōn epoiēsen ponērōn

- however Herod tetrarch being reproved by of Him’” around Herodias - wife of the brother And all of what things did [the] evils

3:20

προσέθηκεν καὶ τοῦτο ἐπὶ πᾶσιν ‹καὶ› κατέκλεισεν τὸν Ἰωάννην ἐν φυλακῇ

prosethēken kai touto epi pasin kai katekleisen ton Iōannēn en phylakē

added And this at among all also he locked up the of John in prison

3:21

Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ βαπτισθῆναι ἅπαντα τὸν λαὸν καὶ Ἰησοῦ βαπτισθέντος προσευχομένου ἀνεῳχθῆναι οὐρανὸν

egeneto de en tō baptisthēnai hapanta ton laon kai Iēsou baptisthentos proseuchomenou aneōchthēnai ouranon

Came however in - to be baptized everything the people And of Jesus having been baptized having prayed was opened heaven

3:22

καὶ καταβῆναι τὸ Πνεῦμα Ἅγιον σωματικῷ εἴδει ὡς περιστερὰν ἐπ’ αὐτόν φωνὴν ἐξ οὐρανοῦ γενέσθαι Σὺ εἶ ὁ Υἱός μου ἀγαπητός ἐν σοὶ εὐδόκησα

kai katabēnai to Pneuma Hagion sōmatikō eidei hōs peristeran ep’ auton phōnēn ex ouranou genesthai Sy ei ho Huios mou agapētos en soi eudokēsa

And descended the Spirit Holy in a bodily form as a dove in Him a cry out of air to become You are - Son of Me beloved in You I am well pleased

3:23

Καὶ αὐτὸς ἦν Ἰησοῦς ἀρχόμενος ὡσεὶ ἐτῶν τριάκοντα Ὢν υἱός ὡς ἐνομίζετο Ἰωσὴφ τοῦ Ἠλὶ

kai autos ēn Iēsous archomenos hōsei etōn triakonta ōn huios hōs enomizeto Iōsēph tou Ēli

And He was Jesus beginning as if of years thirtyfold being son as was supposed Joseph of the of Heli

3:24

τοῦ Μαθθὰτ* Λευὶ Μελχὶ Ἰανναὶ Ἰωσὴφ

tou Maththat Leui Melchi Iannai Iōsēph

3:25

τοῦ Ματταθίου Ἀμὼς Ναοὺμ Ἑσλὶ* Ναγγαὶ
